Robert Schwartzman doubts that he will get a chance to get into Formula 1.
This season, the Petersburger is a Ferrari test driver and has already had one F-1 practice for the Scuderia. In 2023, Rob plans to perform in another series, but has not yet decided where exactly.
To be honest, it`s been a tough year. Unfortunately, I did not race, and this is important for any pilot. I don`t know yet what will happen next, but getting into Formula 1 will be incredibly difficult.
I have always worked very hard for the dream of Formula 1, despite the circumstances. Will it happen or not? At the moment I don`t know. I guess not, probably. Of course, this is very sad: I continued to work and believe, but in the end I won`t be able to get in due to a number of reasons.
I could have performed better in those years [in Formula 2 in 2020 and 2021] - perhaps then my chances for F-1 would have increased. However, success would not be guaranteed. In my opinion, in our time in F-1 is a rather strange situation, to be honest. I don`t quite understand the lineup decisions. I do not want to name names, but I think that places are not always distributed according to merit, unfortunately.
Oscar [Piastri] had to wait for the season and things got a little chaotic. I can mention myself: I put a lot of pressure on him, worked hard. If I had a chance, I would show what I can do, " said Robert.
Schwartzman believes that there is no need to focus on the example of Nick de Vries, who will become the pilot of the Alpha Tauri in 2023:
I respect Nick, he is talented and a good driver, but to be honest, the stars were perfect for him, and he took the opportunity, got into F-1 three years later [after winning F-2]. Nick got one chance and took it.
Will the same happen to me? Who knows. But to waste time outside of racing, hoping for a miracle . . . I think it`s not quite logical for me. Be that as it may, I really want to compete next year, I miss the races. If I do not compete, but wait, wait, wait, then, perhaps, I will not be ready to take a chance due to lack of racing practice.
For me, the main priority is to get a place [in another series]. Where? I do not know yet, we are considering options.
